11/20/10 quarterly workshop
. Activities to drive your dance .
Saturday, November 20, 2010
4.0 Hour . 1:00 - 5:00pm
. Limited enrollment .
Second Cup Swing is hosting another special quarterly Essential Swing Dance Workshop for any dancer who wants to better feel and understand the source of their dance. This afternoon 4.0 hour lead/follow workshop will focus on energy in our Swing.
Energy is what fundamentally distinguishes Swing from any other social dance I've been exposed to; and it's our bodies' response to that energy that gives Swing its distinctive look and feel. It is the follow's willingness to let the energy flow through her, neither giving nor taking away, that is the life-blood of the dance. The lead gives energy through his body, not his arms, thereby leading with more clarity, gentleness and musicality. Through this partnership their dance can express itself through deep stillness, as well as varied movement, and sing with the music.

Prerequisites: None! — However, if you want you and your partners to get the most out of this fundamental workshop then it'll help you if you practice two things:
1) Keeping a bend in the frame of your arms - letting it neither stretch out too far nor collapse in too close as you either move, or are moved. The goal is for you frame to feel integrated with your center so your limbs are not moving around on their own ~
2) Footpatterns for the Jitterbug/6-count & Lindy/8-count ~
This is not so critical for this workshop but it can only help and give you more contexts to practice your connection in.
So, find myself or Natalie and we'll be glad to spend a little time with you and show you exactly what we're talking about. I'll certainly be available at the Saturday dances as well as out at other times too.
Muscle-memory tasks like these simply require a little time and attention. It can feel like your nemesis but you can, in short order, train it to be your friend :)

Our last quarterly workshop was on May 22, 2010 and was on The Core of Connection.
We had a great time and received some pretty nice feedback. If you'd like, you can see a little bit about it here.
Please pass the word to anyone you think might be interested.
Thanks!
